The theme of this article is Chinese young women who studied abroad in Japan at the end of the Qing dynasty up until the Revolution of 1911.
The educational reforms at the end of the Qing dynasty proposed a departure from traditional education. Accordingly, the promulgation of the education of Chinese young women, whose social activities were at the time still severely restricted by traditional customs, was an important theme of modernization. Japan was study modern technology and thought. Women also accompanied their fathers, brothers and husbands and studied in Japan. The young women who studied at ladies' academies in Japan in the early 1900s absorbed much modern thought, and their social activities. This article examines the image of womanhood which these young women developed.
