Since the modern era, royal images have produced a spectacle in mass media. This created a new intense focus on the Queen, who had more than two bodies—natural and politic—that the King has (E. Kantorowicz)： not only as a national symbol but also as wife, mother, and widow. The Queen's multiple bodily images constantly appear in Japanese popular musical theater, reflecting a strong correlation of real and ideal female figures in the (non-) royal society of the time. The Takarazuka Revue, an all-young-female musical theater troupe that was established as a finishing school for being modern women, has changed female representations, considering the expectations for women in the Japanese society and what real women expect, as Japanese royal female persons have undertaken. This paper overviews the performative (re-)presentations of Japanese multiple royal female bodies since the Meiji period to the present, especially focusing on the Queen's interpretable body in The Eagle with Two Heads (2016).
