Pierino da Vinci died young, but he left behind many works during his short lifetime. Despite the awkwardness that comes from his age, they are of high quality, having absorbed well the art of Michelangelo and other prominent artists of the time, such as Bandinelli and Tribolo.
In particular, Samson and the Philistine is a bold challenge to the task pioneered by Michelangelo of depicting a pair of struggling figures in a group, and while reflecting the art of the masters, it is possible to see Pierino's unique sensibility.
This paper will discuss how the issue of viewpoint, an inseparable element of Michelangelo's sculptural form, is developed in Pierino's work through a comparison with Michelangelo's group figures, which Pierino is thought to have used as a reference.
