This year, in Minami-Ashigara City, Kanagawa Prefecture, we examined the possibility of using DIY methods and digital fabrication for temporary buildings and furniture, which could lead to new community activities.
As a result of the study of DIY methods and digital fabrication with residents in Minami-Ashigara, it was found that the use of digital fabrication by beginners was complicated in all aspects. At the same time, there were building methods using strings that had been handed down in the community for a long time. We considered that if residents shared their knowledge, the hurdles to creating furniture and architecture on an individual level would be lowered. Therefore, a study of DIY methods utilizing local knowledge assets was conducted.
We focused on bamboo from abandoned bamboo groves for building materials, which is a problem in the Minami-Ashigara region. We believed that this would help solve the problem and strengthen the area's identity with local materials.
The final proposal took advantage of the flexibility and lightness of bamboo. The pavilion was also designed to be easy to construct, using a modular system that can be expanded with units and erected in a few hours. This makes it easy to convert the pavilion to various uses and sizes. In the actual construction, ten people built nine units in three hours, and all materials could be transported by three light trucks.
The tables used for the marché were also made from bamboo and set up in advance. The table consists of a surface made of split bamboo joined together like a bamboo screen and an enclosure for the foundation. All joints were made of string.
As a result of the marché, several local residents requested that the temporary bamboo structure be used as a rest area and gate. This proved that the temporary structures created this time could be applied to existing community activities. Furthermore, in future activities, we hope that by teaching local residents how to build these structures, they will be able to construct them on their own initiative, thereby triggering new community activities.
Finally, this activity was presented at an exhibition at Minami-Ashigara City Hall and at the Tokyo Biennale. Also, we were able to win first place in the Project Exhibition at the 2022 Tokyo Architecture Collection.
