本プロジェクトは、ウルフの小説家としての仕事を以下の三つの時期に振り分け、年度ごとに順番に研究していった。つまりウルフの人生の順番とは逆に、後期、 中期、前期と時代を遡って、彼女の仕事の意義を検証していくことにした。2019 度は後期ウルフに焦点を合わせ、1930 年代から第二次世界大戦にいたるイギリスの歴史的な視点から後期モダニズムとウルフの関係について検証した。2020年度は中期ウルフに焦点を合わせ、戦間期と呼ばれる第一次世界大戦後の 1920 年代のイギリスの歴史的観点から、ハイ・モダニズムとウルフの関係について検証した。2021年度は、前期ウルフに焦点を合わせ、ヴィクトリア朝末期から第一次世界大戦にいたるイギリスの歴史的な視点から、初期モダニズムとウルフの関係について検証した。
本研究を遂行する中で明らかになっていったのは、ウルフの仕事を（１）ヴィクトリア朝以来のイギリス文学の伝統というローカルな文脈と、（２）20世紀前半の翻訳文学というグローバルな文脈の双方から見直していくことの重要性である。とりわけ二つ目の観点は、現在もっともアクチュアルな研究分野と言える「世界文学」とウルフのエクリチュールを接合する視点を提供することになった。ここではこのテーマに関連する三つの業績について簡単に説明したい。（１）CLN 世界文学・語圏横断ネットワーク第14回研究集会での研究発表「モダニズムの翻訳　ヴァージニア・ウルフの場合」、（２）レベッカ・ウォルコウィッツ『生まれつき翻訳　世界文学時代の現代小説』の翻訳出版、（３）『三色旗』のエッセイ「世界文学としてのヴァージニア・ウルフ」。（１）は、ウルフが同時代の翻訳文学に対してどのようなスタンスをとっていたのかを明らかにしたものであり、（２）は、現代の翻訳文学の状況を明晰に論じた研究書の翻訳である。（３）は、ウルフの日本語文学としての可能性について論じたものである。
The purpose of this three-year project was to divide Virginia Woolf's career into three stages and explore each period annually. However, the point was not to follow her career chronologically, but to move backward from the late stage to the middle stage, and to the early stage. In the first year, the focus was put on late Woolf: I examined the relationship between late modernism and Woolf in terms of British history (the 1930s, the Second World War). In the second, the focus was put on middle Woolf: I explored the relationship between high modernism and Woolf in terms of British history (the interwar period). And in the third, the focus was on early Woolf: I investigated the relationship between early modernism and Woolf in terms of British history (the late Victorian age, the First World War).
What I have found urgent during the pursuit of this project is to explore Woolf in terms of the local context and global context: that is, the tradition and culture of British literature since the late Victorian age, and the flood of "World Literature" through translation in the first half of the twentieth century. Especially the second point is crucial since it provides a fresh perspective to look at Woolf's writings in terms of "World Literature." Here I will briefly mention three examples of the output: (1) my presentation at Cross Lingual-Network entitled "The Translation of Modernism: In the case of Virginia Woolf, (2) my translation of Rebecca Walkowitz's book Born Translated, and (3) my essay I wrote for Sanshokuki entitled "Virginia Woolf and World Literature." My presentation was about Woolf's ambivalent attitude to translated literatures in general, and my translation was about how immediate and simultaneous contemporary translation has become in the age of global cultures. Finally, in my essay I have argued for the possibility of reading Japanese translation as World Literature.
