今回の学事振興資金による主な研究成果は、オンラインで開催された第21回日本認知言語学会にて「日英の属格構文における参照点関係の階層性について」という題目にて口頭発表を行ったこと、及び同一の題目の論文を『教養論叢』の第142号に掲載したことである。
これらの研究の目的は、英語の「NP of NP」構文の成立要件、及び意味構造を精査するとともに、日本語の「NPのNP」構文を同様に精査し、英語と比較対照することであった。対象となる英語の先行研究としては、Langacker (1992, 1993)による「NP of NP」の分析を精査し、不十分な点を指摘した。日本語に関しては、西山 (2003, 2013)の「NPのNP」の分析を同様に検証した。
Langackerは、英語の「NP of NP」の成立要件として、二つのNPの間に成立する内在性を挙げているが、この研究から得られる知見としては、この内在性は双方向的であることを指摘した。さらには、この構文には、参照点関係が関与しており、しかも異なる階層に属する二種類の参照点関係が関与していることを指摘した。続いて、この二種類の参照点関係が、同一の表現において同時的、かつ双方向的に介在可能であることを指摘した。続いて、日本語に関しても、同様に二種類の参照点関係が存在し、同時的、かつ双方向的に介在しうることを指摘した。
理論的知見の貢献としては、三点あり、一つ目は、参照点関係は、異なる階層から関与することが可能であり、その方向性は必ずしも一致しないというものであった。そして、英語の「NP of NP」の"of"、および日本語の「NPのNP」の「の」は、意味の欠落した、統語的に規定される文法的要素ではなく、明確な意味を持つことを示した。さらには、この両者は、概略的な意味を記述しただけでは十分ではなく、プロトタイプが存在し、各用法が密接に関連する、カテゴリー構造を形成しているということも合わせて示した。
The principle achievements made possible by this year's Academic Development Fund was an oral presentation titled "On the Hierarchical Engagement of the Reference-Point Relationships in the Japanese and English Genitive Constructions," given at the 21st annual conference of the Japanese Cognitive Linguistics Association held online and a paper with the identical title that was published in the 142nd issue of Kyoyo-Ronso.
The purpose of theses studies was to examine the semantic structure of the English "NP of NP" construction and reveal its categorical structure as well as to investigate likewise into its Japanese counterpart "NP-no NP," thereby offering a cross-linguistic comparison of the genitive constructions in the two languages. The earlier researches of the English construction by Langacker (1992, 1993) were closely examined, and some inadequacy in them was identified; the prior studies of the Japanese construction by Nishiyama (2003, 2013) were likewise scrutinized.
While Langacker identified the relationship of intrinsicness holding between the two NPs as the schematic requirement for the English "NP of NP" construction, this study pointed out that the relationship of intrinsicness in question can be mutual and bidirectional. It further revealed that two different types of reference-point relationships are involved in this construction, and that they are engaged from a different plane, forming a hierarchy. Another finding of the study was the noteworthy fact that the two relationships can be involved simultaneously and bidirectionally in the very same expression. It was further observed that the same two types of reference-point relationships are identified in its Japanese counterpart as well, and that they can be involved simultaneously and bidirectionally likewise.
There were three theoretical contributions made by this study that are to be noted. One was the fact that the reference-point relationships can be engaged hierarchically from a different plane, their directionality being not always unique. Another one was the finding that the preposition of in the English "NP of NP" construction and the postposition no in its Japanese "NP-no NP" counterpart are not semantically-void, grammatical formatives that are syntactically constrained, but possess specific semantic content that should be positively identified. Last, the study demonstrated that the two constructions cannot be adequately described simply by pointing out the most schematic characterizations, but that they have prototypes and closely-related schemas and usages, forming categories with complex internal structures.
