We have investigated the physics of quantum field theories and their quantum vacuum structure in various settings relevant to phenomena such as Bose-Einstein condensation (at finite temperature, density, and in stationary backgrounds). The class of models investigated within this project comprises relativistic and non-relativistic nonlinear sigma models, that is models that allow to consider interactions and therefore to discuss phase transitions and symmetry breaking.
We have written four papers that form the bulk of the project and more related work is in progress. The first paper is a single-author paper, published in the Physical Review (D section). This paper deals with the mechanism of phase transitions in relativistic nonlinear sigma models at finite and small density. In this paper, we have also devised a novel way to include infrared effects (essentially to clarify what happens at low energy), a problem that has been discussed in the literature recently. The second and third papers deal with extending the results to the case of high density (currently submitted to the Journal of Mathematical Physics), boundary conditions, clarifies the connection between the Coleman-Mermin-Wagner theorem and the Casimir effect (currently submitted to the Journal of Physics). The fourth paper discusses the study of Bose systems in a stationary background. This work is completed and I am in the final stage of preparation of the manuscript that will be submitted (within this academic year) to the Physical Review (A section).
