1480年代初頭、フィレンツェの画家フィリッピーノ・リッピ(1457-1504)は、独立した画家として初めて壁画制作に取り組んだ。1424年に初期ルネサンスの巨匠マザッチョとマゾリーノによって着手されたものの未完のまま残されていたブランカッチ礼拝堂壁画(フィレンツェ)を完成させる仕事である。
様式論を基盤とした先行研究は、本礼拝堂壁画におけるフィリッピーノの魅力あふれる個性を指摘してきたが、この仕事に対する近年の解説は、同じ内容を繰り返すばかりとなっている感が否めなかった。それに対して本研究では、この芸術事業を過去の画家たちとの共同制作と捉える視点を初めて導入し、反フィリッピーノ様式にも光を当てることで、制作の実態にせまろうと試みた。まず、壁画へのフィリッピーノの介入に関する15世紀末から現代までの言説を概観し、フィリッピーノには、マザッチョが残した壁面を完成させる作業と真っ白のまま残されていた壁面に新たな主題を描く仕事が課されていたことを確認した。次に、アルベルティーニ(1510年)とヴァザーリ(1550年/1568年)の記述を丁寧に読み直し、両者ともに、先に確認した二つの仕事を異なる性質をもったものと捉えていた可能性を指摘した。さらに、壁画の観察と同時代の画家の作品との比較を通して、フィリッピーノもまた同様の意識を有し、前者においては、マザッチョの時代の様式を積極的に採用し、後者では、礼拝堂壁画全体の調和に配慮しながらも画家の個性を発揮しようとしていた点を明らかにした。以上から浮かび上がってきたのは、ブランカッチ礼拝堂壁画制作の現場で、模倣と革新の間で揺れ動く画家の心理的側面であった。この提案は、英語論文として日吉紀要「人文科学」36号に投稿済みである。
20年度は、突然全世界に降りかかったコロナ禍に対するオンライン授業の準備や各種対応に追われ、かつまた、私事ではあるが、 産休明けすぐで大きく環境が変わり、自分の研究どころではない状況が続いた。そのようななかで、本助成は、研究遂行をひとつの「義務」とするものであった。結果的に、前代未聞の不安、恐怖、疲労にさいなまれた一年であったが、今後に繋がる新しい道筋をおおきく開くことができたように思われる。この度の研究成果を基盤として、今年度(コロナ禍の状況によっては来年度)、新たに科研費の獲得を目指すとともに、国内外で広く公表していきたい。
The Florentine painter Filippino Lippi (1457 - 1504) started his first fresco work as an independent master in the early 1480s or shortly before, which was the completion of the Brancacci Chapel frescoes in Basilica of Santa Maria del Carmine in Florence originally undertaken by the early Renaissance masters Masaccio and Masolino around 1424 but remained unfinished.
Previous researches based on stylistic analysis had pointed out Filippino's attractive characteristics from the Brancacci Chapel frescoes. Somehow, it is undeniable that the comments upon them in recent publications tend to be a repetition of similar substance. In this research, the author has introduced a new point of view to the study of the Brancacci chapel frescoes to conceive it as a "collaboration" between the painter and antecedent artists while focused on the anti-Filippino style. By doing so it became able to get closer to the actual circumstance of the production of the frescoes.
Previous discussions about how Filippino was involved in the frescoes were examined first. Then it is confirmed that the multiple tasks which were imposed to the painter, namely to supplement the frescoes that have already been painted to some extent by Masaccio and to paint the new frescoes from the beginning on the wall that has been left blank. Then, the texts by the contemporaneous Italian writers Francesco Albertini (1510) and Giorgio Vasari (1550/1568) were re-read attentively. It can be said that the idea to distinguish the two different nature of Filippino's work in Brancacci Chapel was common to them. Furthermore, through the observation of the Brancacci Chapel frescoes and comparison between other works by the painter, it has been revealed that Filippino himself also had shared the same view. That is to say, Filippino had shown his artisanship in the supplemental work by actively adopting the style of Masaccio's period, while he had tried to demonstrate his originality as an artist of Renaissance with consideration to the unity of the whole chapel walls at his own frescoes. From the above, the painter's changing mentality between imitation and innovation against the chapel wall has been unraveled.This proposal has already submitted as an English paper to Hiyoshi Review of the Humanities, vol. 36, 2021(forthcoming).
The fiscal year 2020 whole world was overwhelmed by the covid-19 pandemic and the educational community was no exception. All faculty members were occupied with preparing online lecture or taking other countermeasures against the crisis. On a personal note, I was absent from the university for a while on maternity leave, thus time of research for myself was very limited. Under those circumstances, this grant motivated me to perform my research as a duty. Thanks to this grant, I was able to open a path to further development at the end of this unprecedented year tormented with anxiety, fear and exhaustion. Based on the fruits of this research, I am aiming to acquire Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research again in this year (or next year depending on the situation of covid-19). By doing so I would like to deepen my research further and keep on publishing them globally.
