今回の学事振興資金による主な研究成果は、神戸で開催された第15国際認知言語学会議に"The Semantic Basis of Syntax: The Case of Quantifier Float in Japanese"という題目にて口頭発表を行ったことである。この会議は認知言語学の分野において、国際的に最も権威のある会議であり、世界中から著名な認知言語学者が数多く参加するもので、この学会で口頭発表の機会を得たことは大きな成果であると言える。
発表を行ったのは、日本語における数量詞遊離という現象についての研究である。従来の研究においては、数量詞遊離は統語的な制約を受け、そしてそれは、日本語に名詞句の移動規則という統語現象が存在する証拠と長らくされてきた。これに対し、本研究は、認知文法の枠組みを用い、統語的な制約に頼ることなく、意味的な制約のみで現象を説明をすることが可能であることを示すものである。具体的には、遊離数量詞は、副詞として機能し、それゆえ述語の意味構造を変更するものであり、あくまでも間接的に名詞の数を規定するものであるとの知見に基づき、遊離数量詞の意味構造においては、述語の表すプロセスが量化され、複製化されて、あくまでもその結果として、そのプロセスの参与項も複製されるとの主張である。したがって、遊離数量詞の適格性は、参与項自体の複製可能性ではなく、プロセスの複製可能性によって決定されものであり、そしてその複製可能性には、意味的な性質であるがゆえに、自ずと様々な要因が絡んでくると言える。結論として、このような分析によれば、日本語における数量詞遊離という現象の説明に関して、意味とは別個の統語規則を設定する必要はなく、別個に動機付けられた意味的構築物のみを用いた説明を行うことが可能になる。そして、このことは、とりもなおさず、この分析が理論的拠り所とするところの認知文法の統合性と、それゆえの優位性の主張に貢献するものである。
The principle achievement made possible by this year's Academic Development Fund was an oral presentation titled "The Semantic Basis of Syntax: The Case of Quantifier Float in Japanese," given at the Fifteenth International Cognitive Linguistics Conference held in Kobe. This conference is the most internationally-recognized conference in the field of cognitive linguistics, attended by many internationally-renowned linguists. Therefore, it is quite noteworthy that I was able able to present a paper at the conference.
The research presented at the conference was on the phenomenon of quantifier float in Japanese. In the previous analyses, qualifier float had long been claimed to be constrained by syntactic conditions and to provide evidence of the presence of the syntactic rule of noun-phrase movement in Japanese. In contrast, the proposed analysis, advanced within the framework of Cognitive Grammar, sought to demonstrate the viability of alternatively explaining the phenomenon employing only semantic constraints. To this goal, I adopted the view that floated quantifiers function as adverbials and as such modify the semantic structure of the predicate, quantifying the head noun phrase only indirectly. Based on this view, I claimed that in the semantic structure of a floated quantifier, the process expressed by the predicate is quantified and replicated, with the result of replicating the participants as well. Therefore, I claimed that the acceptability of a floated quantifier is to be determined by the replicability of the process involved, not that of the targeted participant itself and further that varied types of factors are naturally brought to bear in this assessment. In summary, the presented analysis obviated the need for setting up separate syntactic rules in order to explain the phenomenon of quantifier float in Japanese, and paved the way to explaining it utilizing the semantic constructs exclusively that had been independently motivated elsewhere. Therefore, this analysis, framed within the theory of Cognitive Grammar, reinforced the theory's claim to its integrity and thus its superiority.
