Laser-cooled atomic gasses trapped in vacuum are ideal synthetic quantum matter with a variety of tunable parameters, which allows us to explore essential features of quantum many-body phenomena. In recent years, in particular, techniques for inducing synthetic gauge fields in neutral atoms by using lasers have rapidly been developed; such techniques can mimic the effects of electromagnetic fields for charged particles. In a way similar to superconductors in type-II superconductors, a Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) in a synthetic magnetic field exhibits a lattice of quantized vortices. In the present project, we have considered a system of two-component BECs in mutually parallel or antiparallel synthetic magnetic fields, and theoretically analyzed collective modes and effects of quantum fluctuations. Within the mean-field theory, the systems in parallel and antiparallel fields are known to exhibit the same phase diagram that consists of a variety of vortex lattices. By taking account of quantum fluctuations, we have shown that the phase boundaries shift appreciably, particularly for parallel fields. We have also shown that the low-energy spectra for parallel and antiparallel fields are related to each other by suitable rescaling using renormalized coupling constants. By calculating the intercomponent entanglement entropy, we have found that for an intercomponent repulsion (attraction), the two components are more strongly entangled in the case of parallel (antiparallel) fields. This result is in qualitative agreement with our previous results in the quantum Hall regime for high magnetic fields. A situation analogous to Bose gases in synthetic gauge fields is also found in magnetic materials. We have studied the natural mineral volborthite as an example. Volborthite is an example of a highly frustrated quantum magnet with competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions, and a rich variety of field-induced phenomena have been observed experimentally. We have performed a spin-wave analysis starting from the 1/3-plateau phase, and analyzed the magnetic properties on the basis of a magnon Bose gas picture. By taking account of the effects of Dyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, we have shown that the magnon Bloch states acquire a finite Berry curvature, giving rise to a thermal Hall effect, i.e., bending of a thermal current.
