16 世紀初頭までにヨーロッパで制作された写本の多くは、零葉(single leaf)や断片のかたちで残されている。零葉について可能な限り正確な書誌を作成することは、中世写本文化の全体像を知る上で極めて重要だが、零葉の同定はしばしば、情報の少なさゆえに困難を伴う。本研究では、慶應義塾図書館が所蔵する９～１６世紀の零葉類約298点を対象として調査、記述を行った。その結果、慶應義塾図書館の零葉いくつかの興味深い事実や傾向が観察された。
零葉の大半は古書店を通じて図書館に収蔵されているが、そのなかにはA. N. L. Munby（1913-74、ケンブリッジ大学キングズ・カレッジ図書館長）旧蔵の零葉35点(170X@9@2, Pl.1～35)、アメリカを代表する古書店Bernard M. Rosenthal (1920-2017)が編纂した西洋中世古書体学の零葉集(170X@9@18/1～127)、アメリカ人の蒐集家で書物破壊者(biblioclast)として悪名高いOtto F. Ege(1888 – 1951)が作成した零葉セット(170X@61@10@1–10)のように、中世写本について専門的知識を持った旧蔵者が編纂したコレクションが含まれる一方で、収蔵品の約半数は個別に購入されている。それらは、15世紀フランスで制作された時禱書や典礼写本が多いが、それはこのジャンルの写本が相対的に多く現存していて、比較的入手しやすいからに他ならない。
また、今回の調査により、国内外の他の図書館（たとえば国立西洋美術館の旧内藤コレクション、ニュージーランドのDunedin Public Library）が所蔵している零葉類のなかに、同一写本の別葉が見つかった。ひとつの写本から複数の零葉が同時期に複数のルートで販売されたことを裏付けるとともに、同一写本の零葉が多ければ、もとの写本をより正確に再構成することが可能となる。
調査結果は、『究極の質感（マテリアリティ）－西洋中世写本の輝き』第31回慶應義塾図書館貴重書展示会図録（慶應義塾図書館、2019年１0月）に反映させるとともに、同図録に、（慶應義塾図書館所蔵西洋中世写本一覧リスト）としてまとめている。
Many of the Western manuscripts produced by the early 16th century, are extant only in single leaves and fragments. The identification of single leaves however involve difficulties due to apparent lack of information. 298 single leaves and fragments in Keio University Library have been researched and described as far as possible. The research led to the following observations.
Most of leaves were acquired through antiquarian bookdealers. These include 35 leaves in the collection of Dr A. N. L. Munby (170X@9@2, Pl.1–35), Bernard M. Rosenthal, 'Latin Paleography and Diplomatics: Part I : Paleography' (170X@9@18/1–127), and a collection of 10 leaves assembled by the American collector and biblioclast, Otto F. Ege (170X@61@10@1–10). Other than such collections assembled by specialists in medieval manuscripts, leaves were acquired individually. The largest group is leaves from late 15th-century Books of Hours and liturgical manuscripts. As they are extant in the largest numbers, they are relatively easy to acquire. The research uncovered some cases of sister leaves in other domestic and foreign institutions, such as ex-Naito collection of the National Museum of Western Art (Tokyo) and Dunedin Public Library (NZ). Some of the leaves are described in the catalogue of the exhibition entitled, 'The ultimate materiality: the splendour of Western medieval manuscripts' (October 2019) which also includes A Handlist of Western Medieval Manuscripts in Keio University Library, Tokyo'.
