Abstract |
Second language task performance data was collected across four different board games (n = 17) involving multiple features of pragmatic and complex language. Participants were video and audio recorded while engaging in complex, language-rich board games over the course of several hours of play. Participants also completed post-task surveys to reflect on their experiences playing and using language during the games.
A cursory analysis of the data revealed the following trends: (a) rapport building during the game was essential for creating affordances for output in the target forms and motivation; and (b) tasks involving cooperation led to the highest degree of output compared to competition. From transcriptions, a rubric for specific language uses and features will be developed. Another salient feature to be explored unique to this project is the analysis and incorporation of the time it takes to reach successful negotiated meaning, Another potential feature of investigation based on the data is not specific to language form, but the time it takes to reach successful understanding of a concept. The results and rubric developed from this project will have implications for both task-based language performance assessment design and validation, as well as teaching practices that implement game-based tasks in the classroom.
