ホッブズが若き頃トゥキュディデスの『歴史』を翻訳し、かつ後年自らも歴史書『ビヒモス』を書いたことに着目し、おそらくホッブズにとって歴史書は政治教育の書でもあったのであろうという見通しのもと、本年度は「ホッブズと政治教育」というタイトルで申請した。しかし研究を進めてゆくと、トゥキュディデスの『歴史』がホッブズにおよぼした影響は、単に政治教育というトピックにとどまるものではないことが明らかになった。
もともとトゥキュディデスの抑制された筆致と、『ビヒモス』の煽情的な文体とのあまりの違いから、この間にホッブズの政治教育観が変化したのでは、という仮説を立てて始めたが、ホッブズとトゥキュディデスの関係についての研究史で目につくのは、圧倒的に『リヴァイアサン』への言及であり、『ビヒモス』ではない。また、トゥキュディデスのホッブズへの影響については、近年の研究こそスキナーに触発された、「語り聴かせ、眼前に鮮やかに光景を思い浮かべさせ」「感情に働きかけるもの」としての歴史、という解釈が見られるものの、以前の研究史までたどれば、むしろ因果の理解をはじめとした科学的思考に影響を与えたという説もあることが興味深い。（ホッブズとの関係を除いた）トゥキュディデスの研究史自体をみても、法廷弁論の重要性が増してきた当時の古代ギリシャにあって、トゥキュディデスが普遍的な原理や洞察を随所で抽出しようとしたという指摘もある。
これまでの作業を通じて後者の説に傾きつつある私としては、トゥキュディデスの重要概念にあてたホッブズの訳語、それが後期政治思想三部作において持っている位置づけ、両者の思考様式の類似などに着目しながら、トゥキュディデスの『歴史』がホッブズの科学的思考を育んだ可能性について、今年こそ論文の形で探求したいと考えている。
I applied to this fund Under the title of "History and Political Education in Hobbes" with the idea that history was a material for political education on the ground for Hobbes who translated Thucydides's History in youth and wrote a history book "Behemoth" later. But in the course of my research, I came to think that Thucydides's influence on Hobbes was not confined to political education, and I found there are many points which suggest the impacts of Thucydides.
Before I began my research, my hypothesis had a change of Hobbes's view on political education explains the gap between Thucydides's moderate style and Hobbes's sensational style. However, when the relation between the two authors is in question, most scholars have taken up not "Behemoth", but "Leviathan". While some studies maintain their affinity is technique to describe scènes vivdly, other assert that Hobbes was affected by the conception of causation in "History", which means Thucydides nurtured Hobbes's scientific approach. The latter theory seems persuasive because some famous Thucydides's commentators point out that he tried to extract universal principles and insights from historical incidents in the context that courtroom storytelling became important. In terms of latter view, I will try to investigate Hobbes's term in Thucydides's translation, the importance of these terms in Hobbes's thought itself, and the similarity of these two authors, in order to elucidate how Thucydides cultivated Hobbes's scientific method, this year.
