中英語で著された宗教散文Speculum vitae中世後期において広く伝播していた作品である。しかし, 本作品およびその写本の研究は, 2008年にRalph Hannaによる"a reading edition"が刊行されてようやく緒についたところであり, 個々の写本に特化した研究が俟たれている。本研究では, Speculum vitaeの写本のひとつ, MS Takamiya 15(Beinecke Library deposit)を対象とし, 特にSpeculum vitaeの後に転写されている英語による未刊行の宗教文学ミセラニーの機能を, 写本の編纂方針と意図された読者層との関係で明らかにした。本写本の精査を通じて, 写本巻末の未刊行の宗教抒情詩群についてテクストの転写, 典拠の同定をおこない, ミセラニーを構成する作品間の主題の共通性を明らかにするとともに, さらにSpeculum vitaeとの主題上の関連について考察した。
結果として, 45点が現存するSpeculum vitaeの写本のうち16点がいわゆるミセラニー写本だが, そのなかでもTakamiya 15は(数え方によるが)2帖(fols 73r-84v)に7点の作品を含んでおり, もっとも複雑な構造となっている。このセクションを, 未刊行テクストを中心に精査した結果, カテキズムに関する散文小品, 本写本のみで記録されている2編の教訓詩, 神の恩寵に関する抒情詩群という3つのユニットに分けることが可能で, さらにそれらの間には相互連関が見られることがわかった。たとえば, 黙想文学の文体と語彙は, Qui Habitat and Bonum Estだけでなく, カテキズムや恩寵を扱った作品にも見られ, 対話体は複数の作品で主題を問わず繰り返し用いられている。Takamiya 15の編纂者は, Speculum vitaeの主題を意識しつつ, それに相応しい教訓作品ミセラニーを巻末に追加するべく意図的な編纂をおこない, カテキズムを総合的に扱うというSpeculum vitaeの性質を小規模ながらも再現しようとしていることが明らかとなった。
Middle English Speculum vitae was one of the most widely disseminated religious prose texts in the late Middle Ages. However, the analysis of its content and MS context has only just begun with the publication of Ralph Hanna's 'reading edition' so that further detailed study of each MSS are necessary. This study looks at MS Takamiya 15 (Beinecke Library deposit) which has a small religious miscellany at the end of the MS after the main Speculum vitae and clarify its function in relation to the editorial policy of the compiler as well as to the intended reader. The unpublished texts in the miscellany section are transcribed and the sources for them are identified as far as possible.
As a result, it has become clear that of the 45 Speculum vitae MSS of which 16 are miscellanies, Takamiya 15 that contains 7 (depending on how one counts them) items in 2 quires (fols 73r-84v) is by far the most substantial as well as interesting of additions to Speculum vitae MSS. There are 3 distinct units in terms of contents, after Qui Habitat and Bonum Est : prose mostly catechetical texts in the first quire, 2 unique poems, and the final group of popular lyrics on divine mercy. There is a similarity in tone, which was sustained throughout the MS as the choice of some texts is influenced by a previous one. The meditative language that characterizes Qui Habitat and Bonum Est and Horologium sapientiae which is an important source for this florilegium section, is also noticeable in a few non-catechetical passages as well as in the final section. A predilection to a dialogue or address form is a stylistic feature that characterizes the final quire, both in meditative and secular situation. The compiler of the Takamiya 15 is quite conscious of the nature of Speculum Vitae as a spiritual and moral compendium, and it is this aspect that the additional quires also try to create. Looking sometimes consciously at previous items in the MS, the compiler accumulated texts with necessary variety of themes to form a small didactic compendium, that matches the comprehensiveness of Speculum vitae.
