This research considers the application of plywood to furniture and architecture required today, with hints from the practice of Charles & Ray Eames, who worked on the design of American architectural furniture that practiced architectural design and construction using plywood. We proceeded with the research with a view to digitizing them and trying to make them consistent with advanced technology. The initial plan is to visit the United States to investigate the results of local materials and practices, and to interview the people involved to determine the direction for future product production using plywood. However, because travel was not permitted due to the effects of the Covid-19 infection, the method was changed and a survey was conducted on furniture and architecture in the Eames era using plywood, focusing on materials collected in Japan. In addition, we made a mock-up using an actual cutting machine,CNC router,to verify the quality of the product, regarding the new modeling and its production method by the method considered at that time. Using plywood with a standard size, we performed precuts that were conscious of modules, simple assembly methods for them, and verification of water stoppage and structural strength to make them a building, making full use of 3D modeling. The actual space and its movable mechanism can be verified by modeling on a computer before conducting a demonstration experiment. It was also found that the future theme of this research is where to set the boundary between digital and real and how to bring it to 1/1 real space.
The plywood as a new building material used by the Eames and his wife in the 1930s and 1940s was subsequently improved in quality as a building material by improving the glue used to bond the veneer boards. It has become clear that it is possible to make high-quality wood-based products easily and inexpensively by applying digital models using computers while making use of these for future construction and furniture production. I would like to show these in the exhibition of the exhibition that I plan to do in the near future.
