本研究では, 20世紀アフリカ系アメリカ文学の人権思想を二つの観点から考察し, 文学の有する社会的な力を探究した。第一に, アメリカン・ルネサンスの文学とアフリカ系アメリカ・モダニズム小説との間テクスト性に潜む意味を解読する。第二に, 大恐慌期から冷戦期に至る歴史を背景に, 作品群の表明する政治意識を分析する。公民権運動と脱植民地化の原動力となったアフリカ系アメリカ文学の社会的意義が, 研究を通じて浮き彫りになった。
This project explores how twentieth-century African American literature has inspired the pursuit of civil liberties and human rights. This research examines the social characteristics of literary works by conducting (1) an intertextual analysis of the literature of the American Renaissance and African American modernism and (2) an interpretation of African American writings against the historical background of the period from the Great Depression to the Cold War. Based on close reading of works from the socio-political viewpoint, this study portrays African American literature as the main motivating factor for the Civil Rights Movement and decolonization.
