本稿はこれまで本誌に所載した日本橋新乗物町・新材木町に続く商業史的視点にたつ問屋と街の歴史的素描である。江戸時代から明治・大正期に堀留川入堀に接していた堀江町・小舟町について,まずその由来や,江戸時代におけるこの界隈の町並みからこの街の特色を記述する。特に堀江町と小舟町の特色上の違いと照降町の店の略図をかかげ,その景観を明らかにし,江戸湊としての集散物産の中から米と鰹節をとりあげ,これらの問屋を検討する。更に,江戸後期の変貌をみて,明治に入り,鰹節商の小舟町における群生とその背景について,鰹節市場の拡大と
