| Abstract |
本稿は,昭和7年に,現在の日本橋堀留町1丁目となった江戸から明治・大正・昭和にかけての古い町,新材木町の商業史視点にたつ歴史的素描である。すでにこの隣の町,新乗物町(同じ現堀留町1丁目)については,本誌40巻4号に記載してあるが,いずれも,拙著の「日本橋界隈の問屋と街」の延長線上にある研究覚書である。「新材木町」の町名由来記から始まり,江戸時代におけるこの町の特色を,堀留川と椙森稲荷神社の存在から把えてみた。東堀留川に沿った細長いこの町は,竹木薪炭・米の集散地として賑わったが,本稿では同じ堀留川に接する堀
