| Abstract |
本稿は1830 年代から50 年代にかけて, アメリカ南西部において複数の大規模綿花プランテーションを遠隔地から経営していた事例から, 南部経済を支えた綿花生産が南北戦争前に飛躍的な上昇を続けた要因について考察する。本稿は, プランテーションの効率性に関して, 新品種の採用, 技術改良に加えて, プランテーションにおける監督の徹底, 奴隷管理方策, プランテーション間の分業体制などの要素に焦点を当てて分析する。
This study examines the factors that caused the continued dramatic rise in cotton production before the American Civil War, which supported the Southern economy from the 1830s to the 1850s, from a case study of several large-scale absentee cotton plantations in the southwestern United States.
Moreover, it will focus on and analyze factors such as the methods of plantation supervision, slave management measures, organization of labor division among plantations, the adoption of new plant varieties and technological improvements, all of which relate to the efficiency of plantation production.
