本稿では, 産業化における木材利用の視点から, 北海道炭鉱業における坑木の調達・利用方法を九州との比較を通じて考察し, 自然環境の制約に対する炭鉱業の対応を明らかにした。両地域における坑木調達には, 地理的自然条件, 炭鉱開発の時期的背景および炭鉱各社における自社諸炭鉱の位置づけ, 資材調達方針の相違により異なった展開がみられた。しかし, 様々な対応策にもかかわらず, 炭鉱各社は, 出炭量の増加と坑木の確保という自然環境の制約の克服を同時に達成することはできなかった。
From the perspective of utilizing timber in industrialization, this study comparatively examines the procurement and use methods of mine timber in Hokkaido's coal mine industry with that in Kyushu, clarifying the responses from the coal mining industry to constraints of the natural environment. 
Different developments could be seen in mine timber procurement in both regions due to differences in materials procurement policies due to geographical natural conditions, seasonal background of coal mining development, and positioning of each company's coal mines by various coal mine companies. 
However, despite various measures, not all coal mining companies could simultaneously overcome natural environment constraints to increase coal production and ensure stocks of mine timber.
