In the 1930s, Fengtian developed into the largest commercial and industrial city in Manchoukuo. 
Its industry, driven by population growth, expansion of the hinterland market, and a sudden expansion of consumer goods production, in addition to the construction of the Tiexi industrial district and the location of metal and machinery industries, all contributed toward the development of Fengtian as Manchoukuo's heavy and chemical industrial base. 
Moreover, Fengtian occupied an important centralized node position in Manchoukuo even from the commercial perspective. 
As a market and center of trade, a large amount of products were imported and shipped to or from other parts of the country. 
In addition, Fengtian produced and sold consumption goods to the hinterland, also functioning as a center of trade for consumption goods.
