The observation frequently has been made that Giotto's paintings resemble Arnolfo di Cambio's sculptures. Recently, A.M. Romanini has maintained very eagerly that Arnolfo was Giotto's. direct master. She believes, moreover, that the so-called Isaac Master who has been usually identified with the youngest Giotto painter is Arnolfo di Cambio himself. Though I don't share her belief that Isaac Master and Arnolfo was the same person, I stand for her opinion that Giotto should be a direct disciple of Arnolfo. This paper summarizes the history of studies on the relationship between the sculptore and the painter, and reexamines Romanini's opinions on this problem to show the historical situation in which sculpture could have an influence on the birth of a new style of painting.
