【目的】1990年代以降のアメリカの大学院教育の課題に対し, 研究大学の図書館を中心に, 大学院生に対するサービスについて課題の指摘や対策の提案が行われるようになった。本研究の目的は, アメリカの研究大学において大学院教育の課題に対処するために, 大学院生に対してどのような図書館サービスが提供されているのかを調査し, 現状を明らかにすることである。
【方法】研究図書館協会(Association of Research Libraries : ARL)に加盟しているアメリカの研究大学図書館99館のうち, ウェブサイト上に大学院生を対象としたサービスをまとめたページを作成している69館の情報に限定して, 2014年8月から12月に調査を行った。各図書館のウェブサイトから, サービスの構成およびサービスの内容に関する情報を抽出し, 分析を行った。
【結果】大学院生のためのサービスを, 図書館の基本サービスである「図書館資源の提供」, 研究者の側面に関わる「研究活動の支援」, 指導者の側面に関わる「教えることに対する支援」, その他学生生活に必要な情報をまとめた「その他の情報の提供」に整理することで, 大学院生のさまざまな活動領域にサービスが及んでいることが明らかになった。図書館が独自に提供しているものだけでなく, 学内他部署や学外の機関の情報も見られ, 図書館だけでは担いきれない専門的なサービスを, 図書館内外とのさまざまな連携によって提供していた。大学院生のためのページには, 大学院生の図書館利用につながる有用な情報がまとめられており, 大学院生の専門性の高い多様なニーズに対応していた。この結果から, 研究大学の図書館は, 大学院教育の課題に沿ってサービスを構築することによって, 積極性を持って大学院生のためのサービスを提供する傾向にあることが明らかになった。
Purpose : With the problems of graduate education in the United States since the 1990s, research university libraries have indicated issues with the services provided to graduate students. This study explores library services that are offered for graduate students at research universities.
Methods : Among 99 US research university libraries that were members of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), 69 had pages that summarized services for graduate students on their websites. This study extracted and analyzed information about the structures and contents of services for graduate students from the websites of these 69 libraries.
Results : This study found that services for graduate students were classified into four categories ("provision of library resources" as fundamental library services, "support for research activities" to assist researchers, "support for teaching" to aid instructors, and "provision of other information" to respond to graduate student diversity) ranging to the various activity areas of graduate students. Services were offered by libraries, other campus departments, and outside institutions. Pages on the websites had useful information and responded to the specific and various needs of graduate students through cooperation with other libraries. The results of this study indicate that research university libraries tend to constructively provide services for graduate students by addressing the challenges of graduate education.
