南アジアにおける宗教と肉食に関する研究を, ヒマラヤ地域のブータンとインド北東部を対象に実施した。研究手法は現地での聞き取り調査と参与観察および文献資料分析である。ブータンでの調査では, まず, 1)国内の食肉流通と消費に関する国家管理の動態を, 家畜と食肉の流通を管理する畜産局とBAFRAでの情報収集, 南部諸県にある屠畜場養豚施設での聞き取り調査をとおして明らかにし, 次に2)近年の村落社会における屠畜の放棄と仏教教義に基づいた放生実践の拡大という現象がどのように結びつき, またどのような経済的・社会的問題を生み出しているのかを, 民間の放生団体や仏教僧侶による活動と, それにより生業の変化を強いられる牧畜村の変容から明らかにした。これらの調査は, 近年の屠畜場建設計画反対のうねりや, 動物愛護への国際的な協調の動きが, ブータン社会の生業や文化とって何を意味するのかを, 重層的に考察することを可能とした。また, これと同時に, 動物の殺生と宗教の関係をより広い文脈で考えるため, インド亜大陸とは異なる文化を発展させてきたとされる北東インド諸州の事例についても調査を実施した。ヒンドゥー教徒が多数派を占めるインドと, イスラーム教徒を多数派とするバングラデシュ, 仏教徒が多数派を占めるビルマ, そして多くがキリスト教へ改宗した北東インド諸州, これら異なる宗教空間が接合するインド北東部は, 宗教と肉食をめぐるポリティクスが重層的に現れる地域の一つである。実際に, インドのモディ政権が推進する牛保護政策と牛肉の販売・保持の禁止を掲げる政策は, この地域における文化的多様性を等閑視し, 宗教上の制限が生み出してきた肉畜に関わる需要と供給の危ういバランスや職業集団のありようを大きく変容させつつある。北東インド地域における家畜市場と流通, 屠畜者とその階層に対する考察は, 多様な宗教と肉食との関わりについての人類学的な研究に新たな知見をもたらしている。
A study on religion and meat-eating in South Asia was conducted for Bhutan in the Himalayan region and Northeastern India. The research methods are an interview survey at the site, observation of participation and document analysis.
During the field research in Bhutan, firstly I attempted to reveal the state management dynamics of domestic meat distribution and consumption through collecting information from the Department of Livestock and BAFRA, which controls the distribution of livestock and meat as well as slaughterhouses and pig farming facilities in southern prefecture. Secondly the linkage between the phenomenon of abandonment of slaughtering animals in the rural society of recent years and the expansion of Buddhist practice for saving lives were examined through the interviews with private religious groups and Buddhist priests in town and the observation of transforming pastoral villages in rural areas. These surveys are aimed at multilayered consideration of what the movement against the construction plan of slaughterhouses in capital and international cooperation towards animal welfare mean for the livelihood and culture of Bhutanese society.
At the same time, in order to examine the relationship between animal slaughtering and religion in a wider context, I conducted a survey in the Northeast India, which has been a contact zone for various religion for decades. The BJP government's policies to protect 'sacred cows' for Hinduism and prohibit every citizen from selling of beef in India is disregarding the cultural and religious diversity in this area, and also disturbing both the delicate balance of occupational classification which has been caused by religion and the delicate balance between supply and demand for beef in this area. The study clarified the people's daily resistance against the governmental policies on restraining their customs and described the cultural politics between external influences such as global movement of animal welfare and conventional religion.
