In this thesis I made clear the range and grounds of Spinoza's scheme of toleration, and examined the validity of the underlying argument of the separation of theology and philosophy, in order to clarify today's significance of his theory of toleration. I chose Tractatus Theologico-Politicus as the main text.
There are two main pillars in Spinoza's theory of toleration. The first one is an appeal for freedom of expression. Though it covers various types of speeches, he especially focuses on academic freedom. Spinoza gives three grounds for the freedom. Natural Right, Summum Bonum through reason and intuition, that is to say, a passage from the first kind of knowledge to that of the third kind, and the establishment of critical methods of Bible studies.
In contrast to the first one which aims at freedom, the second pertains to the viewpoint of government, the key of which is the doctrine of the universal faith. The doctrine consists of seven articles, including the existence and unity of God, and the necessity of piety and obedience. The purpose of the doctrine is to turn reverence for God into obedience to the supreme power, by reducing the tenets of theology to charity and justice in behavior. As for actual practice of religion, Spinoza insists that the ruling class should embrace the state religion. But as long as people worship in small churches at distant places, he leaves other small sects holding their own services.
At the basis of these strategies is the separation of theology and philosophy, that means each discipline rules its own realm, and one has nothing to do with the other. But this claim should be regarded as a kind of camouflage, because Spinoza scraps theology by his critical method and ties theology to imagination. In other words, he ruins the system of the first kind of knowledge (imaginatio) with the second one (ratio).
Therefore I would say that Spinoza's theory of toleration is an attempt to lead society to the ratio side, with the utmost consideration given to imaginatio. Toleration here is not an issue of principle, but that of prudence geared to harmonize open-minded understanding and social stability.
