江戸時代, およそ二世紀以上にわたって継続した浮世絵美人画の歴史は, 18世紀後期に最盛期を迎えたあと, 次世紀に入るといわゆる退廃的な美を志向するようになるとされる。歌麿亡き後の美人画家には, 北斎や国貞, 英泉らが台頭したが, たとえば北斎については一般には美人画を描いたという事実自体が認知されているとは言い難い。そもそも同時期の美人画が総じて, いわゆるポスト歌麿様式であったという根本的指摘すらも, 声高にはなされてはいない状況にあると思われる。
文化期初頭(1800年代)に美人画を描いた絵師のなかでは, 北斎と国貞, 英泉らが顕著な活動をおこなったが, 北斎は絵画のみで版画をほとんど残さず, また国貞も師匠歌川豊国の画風を受け継ぐなど, 各自が歌麿様式の余韻のなかで, 個別の状況下に鋭意作画をおこなったのである。
とりわけ北斎の場合, 『富嶽三十六景』に代表される名所絵版画の作者として, その名が繰り返し喧伝されるが, しかしながら, 北斎は三十歳代末期からの, まさに「北斎」号を名乗り始めるその時期に, 盛んに美人画を描いて声望を高めたという事実があり, 広く周知されているそのイメージとは大きな乖離がある。このように, 人気浮世絵師として報じられる江戸の絵師や作品の像については, バイアスのかかった巷説も多く流布しているため, 浮世絵師本来の画業である美人画制作という視点から19世紀初頭の浮世絵界を読み直すことは新鮮であり, 研究上にも頗る大きな意味があるものと考えている。
今回北斎については, 重要文化財指定の既知の名品に加えて, 新たに発見された複数の作例を調査, さらに公刊により報告し, 文化年間の北斎が美人画家として往時認知されていたこと, さらにはその美人画が, 浮世絵全体の美人画のなかでも白眉と呼ぶべき極めて優れた作品群であることも再確認した。なお, 国貞や英泉などの他の絵師たちの作品研究は他日を期して, 調査を重ねるとともに追考を加えていきたい。
In the Edo period, the history of Ukiyo-e paintings which continued for more than two centuries, is said to be oriented towards so-called decadent beauty in the 19th century, after reaching its peak in the late 18th century. Hokusai, Kunisada and Eisen emerged after Utamaro's death, but it is hard to say that, the fact Hokusai drew many paintings is not well recognized in general. Also, the fundamental point that the Ukiyo-e beauties of the same period was the so-called Post-Utamaro style, is not being recognized yet.
Among the painters who painted beautiful women in the early Bunka Period (1800's), Hokusai, Kunisada and Eisen performed outstanding activities. But Hokusai left only paintings, and Kunitada was also a master inherited the Toyokuni style, each of them dared to draw up under individual circumstances in the lingering of Utamaro style.
Especially in the case of Hokusai, the name is repeatedly advertised as the artist of the landscape prints typified by "Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji". However, since the end of thirties, Hokusai has been raising his reputation by virtuously painting beautiful women, from that time when he just begun to name the "Hokusai". In this way, as for the statues of Edo's painters and works that are reported as popular Ukiyo-e, a lot of biased lectures have also been disseminated. For this reason, I believe that it is fresh to read the Ukiyo-e art world at the beginning of the 19th century from the viewpoint of beauty paintings, which are the original works of Ukiyo-e artist.
As for the paintings of beautiful women by Hokusai, we investigated several newly discovered works in addition to well-known masterpieces, and reported these by publication. As a result, it also reaffirmed that Hokusai in the Bunka era was recognized as a painter of beautiful women in the long run, and that his paintings are a kind of so excellent work group among the entire Ukiyo-e beauties. In addition to this, other painters such as Kunisada and Eishi, I would like to add another review on the next research for the other day.
