My research is the comparative study of nativism in Southeast Asia. For the sake of comparison, I conducted my field research in Indonesia and Myanmar.
Generally, nativism is a race-based animus toward immigrants. My literature research revealed that nativism has been formed and developed in many countries and regions when the majority feel insecure in political, social, economical, cultural and religious sense. Nativism is the majority's consciousness and attitude towards the minority or foreigner(s). It is in a sense a form of nationalism.
Both Indonesia and Myanmar have the majority's nativism against particular "foreign" elements. In Indonesia Muslim majority show their nativism against ethnic Chinese, and Hindu dominated region and its people, whereas in Myanmar Buddshist majority is antagonistic against Muslism Rohingya. In both cases nativism reflects the majority's social conservatism and religious insecurity that have developed in the last two or three decades.
