Abstract
In this paper, the author discusses "Pilgrims' Footpaths Renewal Movement (PFRM)" that has become popular in modern Shikoku Henro pilgrimage. The purpose of this paper is as follows: 1) to add an observation on a challenge of reorganization of modern sacred space by focusing on pilgrims' ways. 2) to suggest emphasis on local communities in arguing cases of folk religion and tourism. PFRM is a phenomenon named by the author to indicate "a series of trials to rediscover and restore pilgrims' footpaths and pilgrimage-related cultures, to share them as assets by four prefectures in Shikoku and to appeal them to both inside and outside of Shikoku." The movement originates in an idea to reconsider that pilgrims' footpaths are the historical heritage with one-thousand-year-tradition and folkways such as Settai, provision of food or other necessities to pilgrims, are inherent culture. It also aims to appeal the importance of "Path of prayers," deconstruct them cleverly and make use of them as resources of tourism and local communities making. The author takes up a project that started in 2000 by the then prefectural governor of Tokushima, explains its overview and analyzes it from viewpoints of folk religion, tourism and local communities. The author then examines significance of PFRM, reorganization of sacred space and expected behavior and attitude of local people in each of the above three contexts.
