This study aims to longitudinally examine the educational effects of Baseballership Education on non-cognitive skills and other factors in the Republic of Ghana, Africa. As preliminary research, semi-structured interviews and questionnaires were conducted domestically with various athletes. This involved selecting questionnaire items including scales such as the Big Five, Growth Mindset Scale, WHO-5 Well-Being, Group Environment Questionnaire, Grit, PERMA, and Life Skills. These were adjusted to include items sensitive to local culture and profiling items, and the survey content was finalized. This research received approval from the SFC Research Ethics Committee. In August 2024, Keio University Baseball Club members were dispatched as JICA Overseas Cooperation Volunteers. They conducted lecture-style workshops and practical coaching sessions in four regions: Cape Coast, Dodoa, Kofolidiya, and Tema. Various psychological surveys were administered before and after these sessions. The implementation of this research proceeded smoothly, thanks to the substantial cooperation of the Ghana Baseball and Softball Federation, including prior coordination, and the establishment of a collaborative framework with personnel from various Ghanaian universities. Key findings from this year's survey include: 1) A noticeable improvement in mindset, suggesting a shift towards a “growth mindset” – the belief that one's abilities can be enhanced through baseball education; 2) well-being results indicated that diverse experiences through baseball may enhance psychological well-being. Furthermore, 3) significant differences were observed in four factors of group cohesion, suggesting that baseball education may foster teams where individuals find both social and task-related appeal in the group, leading to enhanced collective unity. These research findings were presented at the 2nd Annual Conference of the Japan Baseball Studies Association and received an Excellence Award. This study partially demonstrated the impact of baseball-based education on human resource development, specifically its effects on psychological qualities related to non-cognitive skills. Moving forward, we aim to continue our research through longitudinal and cross-sectional evaluations to further demonstrate the social value of baseball, not only in Japan but globally.
