本助成金は、申請者による（共）編著“Japan in the Early Modern World: Religion, Translation, and Transnational Relations” (J.B. Metzler Berlin, Heidelberg, 2025)の刊行費用として賜った（Softcover ISBN: 978-3-662-70423-3/ eBook ISBN: 978-3-662-70424-0）。2022年に行われた国際シンポジウム参加者から選抜した言語学・宗教学・文献学・美術史学に属する総勢10名が、近世初期カトリックの日本宣教に焦点を当て、それに対する土着宗教やヨーロッパのプロテスタント諸国家の反応、さらに、その後数世紀にわたるアジア諸言語の翻訳資料への学問的関わりを精査することで、翻訳が近世の知的世界に形成的な影響を与えたことを実証的に証明している。特に、これまで明らかにされていなかった新資料の開示を複数含むとともに、全編にわたって分析対象として使用されている日本イエズス会版の現存状況についてのハンドリストが掲載されており、これらは、当該研究分野における顕著なアップデートであると自負している。
出版にあたっては全文オープンアクセスを採用し、さらに出版社の既存のシリーズ“Übersetzungskulturen der Frühen Neuzeit（近世における翻訳文化）”の一冊として刊行することとした。これによって、関連書誌へのインターネット上のアクセスが容易になるとともに、広範囲かつ専門的な読者への到達も期待される。なお、編集作業に遅延が生じ、刊行計画から大幅に遅れての刊行となったことを心よりおわび申し上げる。
This grant was awarded to cover the publication costs of the (co-)edited volume‘Japan in the Early Modern World: Religion, Translation, and Transnational Relations’ (J.B. Metzler Berlin, Heidelberg, 2025) (Softcover ISBN: 978-3-662-70423-3/ eBook ISBN: 978-3-662-70424-0). A total of ten international scholars from the fields of linguistics, religious studies, philology and art history focus on early modern Catholic mission in Japan, and by examining the reactions of indigenous religions and European Protestantism to this, as well as the scholarly engagement with translated materials in Asian languages over the following centuries, they empirically demonstrate that translation had a formative influence on the intellectual milieu of the early modern period. In particular, the handlist of the extant state of the Japanese Jesuit prints, used as an analytical object throughout the entire volume, is the most up-to-date in the relevant research field.
The book is published as the first volume in the publisher's series ‘Übersetzungskulturen der Frühen Neuzeit (Translation Cultures of the Early Modern Period)’ and is fully open access. This is expected to reach a wide range of specialist readers. I would like to apologize for the delay in the editing process and the publication of the book, which was significantly delayed from the original publication plan.
