The relationship between art and health and the benefits that art brings to the mind and body, such as the enhancement of personal well-being and reduction of stress and anxiety through art appreciation and engagement with beauty, has been the focus of worldwide attention. However, until now, research has mainly focused on qualitative and qualitative studies, and quantitative understanding and clarification of the underlying mechanisms have yet to be achieved. In addition, the evaluation of aesthetic experiences related to art appreciation has mainly been conducted in the laboratory under very restricted conditions. Still, the ecological validity of such studies has always been highly criticized, and both experimental control and ecological validity are needed. In FY2023, we will be creating reproductions of paintings using a high-definition large-format printer that can print on a canvas the same size as a painting exhibited in a museum. The reproductions were displayed side by side in the laboratory, just as in a museum, and the behavior of visitors while walking around and looking at the works could be measured (mock museum). In the measurement, we used the methods established in FY2022, such as measuring the viewer's line of sight while viewing the paintings using a spectacle-type line-of-sight measuring device and measuring the position of the viewer using a depth camera. Also, we added new physiological indicators such as wireless skin potential and pulse rate. In recent years, viewing behavior in actual art museums has begun to be studied, but there have been very few studies that combine viewing behavior with control in laboratory experiments. In this study, we also conducted a laboratory study of engagement with artworks (involvement in viewing). It was shown that the evaluation of artworks increases when people become aware of the degree to which they try to see the artworks. We plan to confirm the reliability of the results and examine them in real situations.
