近現代日本におけるアメリカ政治研究の学問的系譜を実証的に検証することを目指した本研究では、その学問的系譜の端緒を開いた東京帝国大学法学部教授・高木八尺について、そのアメリカ留学中の学習記録や、高木が帰国後に発表した著書・論文などを分析した。また、高木の後、東京大学法学部においてアメリカ政治外交史講座を引き継いだ斎藤眞が高木から継承し、あるいは、継承しなかったものについても考察し、近現代日本におけるアメリカ政治外交研究の伝統と発展の系譜を明らかにすることも目指した。このためにまず、高木が東京帝国大学などでの学習を経て、ハーバード大学に留学し、同大学で何を学んだのかについて、ハーバード大学所蔵史料や高木の講義筆記ノート、高木の回想録などから詳細に検討を加え、2023年10月にはアメリカ政治外交研究者が参加した研究会を開催し、研究代表者が「高木八尺の学修・留学・信仰―渡米前の人格形成過程―」と題して研究報告を行い、アメリカ留学中の高木の学習過程についても議論を深めた。高木から斎藤への学問継承について検証するべく、2023年12月には、斎藤の門下生である古矢旬・東京大学名誉教授にインタビューを行い、斎藤からみた高木の学問的特徴や評価、アメリカ研究の課題などについて、詳細にお話をうかがった。これらの研究を通して、ピューリタニズムとフロンティアに特徴づけられる高木史学がいかに形成され、それが斎藤によってどう継承・変容され、現在のアメリカ研究に影響を与えているのか、その一端を解明することを得た。今後は、アメリカ政治外交研究者との対話を深めながら、研究報告の成果を学術論文として発表し、日本留学生史、アメリカ政治外交研究などに貢献していきたい。
This research aimed to clarify the genealogy of research on American politics in modern and present Japan. I analyzed records of study in US and books and papers of Yasaka Takagi who served professor of Imperial University of Tokyo and triggered the genealogy. My research scope extended to Makoto Saito who succeeded American political and diplomatic history course of the University of Tokyo from Takagi and succession and breaking off between Takagi and Saito. The scope widened to tradition and development process of research on American politics and diplomacy in modern and present Japan. To achieve my research, I analyzed Takagi’s process to study at Harvard University based on the study at Imperial University of Tokyo and contents of the study at Harvard using materials owned by Harvard, written notes and autobiography of Takagi. As a result, I made a presentation titled “Study in Japan and US, Faith of Yasaka Takagi: Formation process of Personality before US Study” for scholars on American politics and diplomacy, and discussed study days in US of Takagi on October, 2023. To study on the succession from Takagi to Saito, I made an interview with Professor Emeritus Jun Furuya of the University of Tokyo as a pupil of Saito on December, 2023. Prof. Furuya told me characteristic and evaluation of Takagi and issues of American studies from the view of Saito in detail. Through these research, I clarified some of making process of Takagi's historical view corroborated by Puritanism and Frontier, process of succession and change by Saito, and influence of Takagi to present American studies. I would like to contribute to history of Japanese foreign students and research on American politics and diplomacy to publish my presentation as a paper having a dialogue with scholars on American politics and diplomacy.
