本研究は, バイリンガル認知が二言語の言語知識, 言語習得時期, 言語使用度によってどのように変わるのかを, さまざまな二言語の組み合わせのバイリンガルを対象として実験を行いマルチコンピテンスの観点から調査した。日本人英語使用者, 韓国人留学生, 日本手話話者, 日英バイリンガルを対象に, 多読と眼球運動, 感情語の心的反応, 読み書きの習得, 二言語の流暢性と脳側性について調査した。結果, 表出するバイリンガルの言語状態(熟達度)は個人の言語環境と経験および現在の言語使用に影響されながら成立していることが示唆され, 認知プロセスは二言語のプロセスを効率的に統合したかたちで確立されると推定される。
This study examined from a Multi-Competence viewpoint how bilinguals'cognition would vary according to linguistic knowledge of the two languages, age of acquisition and language usage, based on the results of various types of bilingual subjects in several experiments. The performances of Japanese users of English, Korean students in Japan, Japanese-English bilinguals adults and children, deaf signers of Japanese Sign Language were investigated in this study. The data collected were eye-movement, responses to emotion words, acquisition of reading and writing, fluency and laterality of two languages. The results suggest that appeared language conditions (i.e. proficiencies) are formed being affected by each bilingual's linguistic environment and experiences as well as current use of the two languages and cognitive processes are presumed to be established as an efficiently integrated form of the two language processes.
