本研究においては、両大戦間期の国際赤十字運動の進展と国際人道法が整備される過程を検証し、「人道主義」が国際社会における主要な規範となり、それに基づく様々な活動が活発化する過程と、その限界・阻害要因を明らかにした。赤十字運動創設の契機となったアンリ・デュナンの『ソルフェリーノの思い出』の受容を感情史および法制史の側面から検証することで、人道主義が19世紀後半から20世紀前半にいかに定着したのかを論じた。また、第一次世界大戦に由来するさまざまな人道危機への対応をめぐり、人道主義がいかに実践されたのか、そしてその都度の経験がその後の時代にどのように反省・反映されたのかを検討した。　
In this study, I examined the development of the international Red Cross movement and the evolution of international humanitarian law in the modern world, and clarified the process by which "humanitarianism" became a major norm in the international community and various activities based on it became active, as well as the limitations and impediments to such activities. By examining the reception of Henry Dunant's "Memoirs of Solferino," which triggered the founding of the Red Cross movement, from the aspects of emotional and legal history, I discussed how humanitarianism took root in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. I also examined how humanitarianism was put into practice in response to the various humanitarian crises stemming from World War I, and how the experiences of each case were reflected and reflected upon in subsequent periods.
