本研究の目的は、「科学と政治思想」という主題を中心に、近世江戸期における西洋学術の伝播と東アジアの伝統との相剋について、比較政治思想史の観点から検討することにある。
近世日本では「窮理」という儒学の枠組みを基礎に、蘭学が勃興した。そして19世紀中葉、西洋世界と対峙する中で、それらの思想的伝統を基礎にヨーロッパ人文社会諸科学の導入が図られた。本研究では、日本とオランダとの文化接触を中心に、初期近代西洋世界と東アジアとの思想的連鎖に光を当てながら、近代日本における「科学としての学問」の源流を探り、その形成と発展の特質を政治思想史の視座から文化横断的に解明した。
The purpose of this study is to examine the development of Western studies in Eighteenth and Nineteenth Century Japan, focusing on the cultural influence of the Netherlands seen through the lens of comparative political thought.
In the Edo period, Japanese scholars intellectually struggled with European studies through the Dutch language on the basis of the Confucian notion of kakubutsu kyuri (the investigation of things and the penetration of principle). These academic traditions served as a catalyst in the acceptance of Western humanities and social sciences during the mid-nineteenth century. In this research, I explored the origin of the ideas concerning ‘science and political thought’ in modern Japan by shedding light on the cultural exchange between early modern Western world and East Asia.
