Abstract
Hoshi (2004a,b) observes an apparently puzzling hybrid nature of N-final relativization in Japanese, viz., simultaneous movement and non-movemnet properties: presence of CNPC effects, presence of connectivity/reconstruction effects, lack of idiom chunk interpretations, lack of scope reconstruction effects and lack of relative Q-scope shift. In an attempt at solving this aporia, I will propose to parametrize the external D system of Kayne’s (1994) D-CP structure with respect to the property [±operator]. It will be demonstrated that this parameter plays a pivotal role in accounting for the observed peculiar hybrid phenomena at hand, while the resulting derivations of the relatives in Japanese being thoroughly examined. On top of that, some typological implications of the hypothsis in question for the head-internal relatives will be briefly considered in a cross-linguistic setting.
