This article examines the effects of Chinese import competition on employment in Japan using commuting zone (CZ) and firm-level data from 2001 to 2012. Both CZ-level and firm-level analyses indicate a decline in manufacturing employment, particularly during the 2001–2006 period. However, while import competition appears to have a positive effect on non-manufacturing employment at the CZ-level, the effect is negative at the firm level. These contrasting results suggest that the positive CZ-level effects are driven by across-firm employment reallocation from manufacturing to non-manufacturing firms, rather than within-firm employment reallocation.
