本稿では，金澤周作『チャリティの帝国──もうひとつのイギリス近現代史』（岩波新書，2021年）を参照軸とした比較史の試みとして，江戸・東京の地域的慈善について考察した。近世後期の江戸では身分団体間の関係のなかに施しが組み込まれていたが，明治維新後この団体間関係は消失する。代わって地域的な慈善に欠かせない回路となったのは，区役所経由の寄付金集約・配布であった。19世紀のロンドンではミドルクラスによる慈善対象の選別の試みがチャリティを勢いづけたのに対し，江戸・東京では富者が直接的な選別に向かう契機自体を欠いていた。
This essay compares local charity in nineteenth-century Edo/Tokyo with the case of London discussed in Kanazawa Shusaku, Charity no teikoku: mō hitotsu no Igirisu kingendaishi [Empire of Charity: Another British Modern History] (Tokyo: Iwanami shoten, 2021). The practice of almsgiving in Edo was incorporated into the relationships between status groups under the Tokugawa status order. Following the Meiji Restoration, local charities organized by newly established ward institutions took the place of inter-group relations. Although the desire of the middle class to choose the recipients of their money propelled charity in London, the charity system in Edo-Tokyo did not effectively foster such a desire among wealthy citizens.
