| Abstract |
本稿の目的は，近代日本において主要産業とされてきた綿業の研究史の到達点とその課題を論じることである。これまでの研究は，日本綿業の展開をイギリスなどの先進資本主義国を念頭において比較検討しようとするものであった。その結果，検討対象の企業は，大紡績資本に重きがおかれた。しかし，近代日本の地域において，中小企業の成長が重要な役割を果たした。そして，地域の資産家たちが，その企業の成長に大きく貢献したのである。したがって，近代日本の工業化は，地域の視点をも組み込んで描き出すことが必要とされるのである。
This paper discusses the results of previous research based on the cotton industry, which has been regarded as one of Japan’s main industrial sectors. The objective of this research is to compare modern Japan’s cotton industry with that of a developed country such as the United Kingdom. Therefore, the research primarily revolves around large enterprises. Small and medium-sized enterprises are also important for regional economic growth. In addition, wealthy local residents play a significant role in corporate performance. Therefore, modern Japan’s industrialization should be researched from a regional perspective.
