ミルとマルクスは, ともに人間の自由の実現を目指したが社会改革の構想は際立つ対照を示している。だがミルの思想からみたマルクス主義の欠陥は政治的には利用されたが理論的には注目されなかった。二人が活躍した19 世紀中葉から150 年余りを経過した今, その後の歴史的経験をふまえて, ミルとマルクスの社会思想を対比してその課題の原点に立ち返り, 問題を見直すことは, 混沌として不安定な現代社会の見方を整理し, 今後の社会の在り方にヒントを与えてくれるものと思われる。
J. S. Mill and Karl Marx common object of social reform to realize human freedom. However, their ideas of reform reveal a remarkable contrast. Mill's possible criticism of Marx's socialism has often used for ideological purposes, but its significance has not been fully appreciated on theoretical grounds. Now that a century and a half has passed from Mill and Marx's time, we have acquired some knowledge of historical experiences about property and economic system. This vantage point enable us to reconsider their views on socialism, which grants us some clues contemporary social reform.
