| Abstract |
アヘン戦争に敗北した清朝は, イギリスを始めとした欧米各国と次々と不平等条約を結び, 居留地には多くのプロテスタント宣教師も渡来するようになった。彼らはカトリック布教禁止令の下で, 教会建設もままならない中, 文書による伝道を展開していった。これらの文書の中には, 直接キリスト教の教義を説く文書もあれば, 西洋の近代科学の紹介書もあった。
中国が近代化に苦しんでいた同じ時期, 日本でも幕末～明治という近代化の嵐が起こっていた。中国においてプロテスタント宣教師によって著された布教書, 近代科学の紹介書は, 半年を経ず幕末の長崎に舶載され, 日本の近代化にも大きな役割を果たすことになった。
After its defeat in the Opium War, China signed unequal treaties with UK and other western countries. As a result, a number of Protestant missionaries began to live in Chinese settlements. At that time, Catholic has been banned in China. Protestant missionaries were also unable to build a church. In such a situation, they began preaching by the writings. In their writings, some documents directly preached Christian teaching, while others introduced western manuals of modern science.
At the same time, a storm of Meiji modernization from the Edo period was happening in Japan. In less than six months, books written by a number of Protestant missionaries were ubiquitous in Nagasaki at the end of the Edo period, playing a major role in the modernization of Japan.
