アメリカ史における西部研究は, 20世紀中は, ほぼターナーのフロンティア理論をもとに発展した。それは, 西部のフロンティアの存在がアメリカ化, 個人主義, 民主主義といったアメリカ例外主義的要素を生み出し, アメリカの発展を支えたという主張である。1980年代以降この理論は批判を浴び, その後の多文化主義やグローバル・ヒストリーなどの影響を受けて西部研究は細分化し, フロンティア理論のような理論的支柱のないまま, 現在に至っている。
History of the American West developed along the disciplines that were laid out in Frederick Jackson Turner's frontier thesis throughout most of the 20th century. Since the 1980s, the major elements of the thesis that promoted American exceptionalism, such as the rise of individualism, seeds of democracy, and rapid "Americanization" on the frontier, came under severe criticism from the "New Western Historians" that focused more on ethnic diversity, class structure and gender issues. While western history today has sprawled into smaller subfields without a grand thesis that would replace the Turnerian view, several new promising directions in research have emerged to keep the field relevant in American history.
