Abstract |
Since the 1990s, an increasing number of studies have focused on the workplaces and employees of the German Imperial Post Office. These studies have attempted to clarify the reality of the communication revolution that rapidly and extensively proceeded during the Second German Empire. Following this line of inquiry, this study examines the problems that employees faced and how these problems were handled. Previous studies primarily focused on the intentions of the First Secretary of the German Imperial Post Office, Heinrich von Stephan. However, neither employee behavior nor client reaction was adequately examined. To fully understand these workplaces, this study focuses on gender segregation in these workplaces that was accelerated by the introduction of the telephone, the evaluation of employees' skills from the viewpoints of supervisors and clients, and the labor problems that emerged at the end of the Nineteenth century.
