Abstract |
In my book (Kashiwabata 2017), I questioned the unrotatability of holes, advocated by Professor Daisuke Kachi in his Holes and Boundaries: An Ontological Investigation (2008). In his review of my book (Kachi 2018), Professor Kachi defended his position in response to my opinion, and critiqued the eliminativism regarding holes that I had argued for. In this paper, I reiterate and elaborate on my own eliminativism about holes and the arguments that I raised against Professor Kachi. In my view, we can demonstrate the rotatability of holes using a thesis implicit in Professor Kachi’s arguments or a thesis that can be naturally added to his arguments, both of which concern the diachronic identity of the proper parts of holes; as an eliminativist about holes, howeber, I am not committed to these theses. What I seek to emphasize here is the close conceptual connection between movement and rotation.
