The purpose of this paper is to examine differences and similarities in educational thoughts between Kenji Miyazawa (1896–1933) and Kokuchukai by comparing their views of education as a part of efforts to clarify what Kenji Miyazawa tried to achieve through education. Kenji Miyazawa is generally known as a man of letters and worked as a teacher of an agricultural school, and found "Rasuchijinkyoukai," a private school for peasants. He also became a member of Kokuchukai, a lay-oriented Nichiren Buddhist group. The founder of this group was Chigaku Tanaka (1861–1939), who advocated Nichiren-ism which aimed to unify Japan and the rest of the world by the unity of religion and politics.
Because it is difficult to find a relationship between Kenji Miyazawa's educational thoughts and those of Kokuchukai, this study made a comparison by looking into their educational views shown in Kokuchukai Journal, "Tengyouminpou" and "Dainippon," and works and practices by Kenji Miyazawa.
Although there were multiple development possibilities in Nichiren-ism, it was found that Kokuchukai encouraged human development as a nationalist, while Kenji Miyazawa focused on way of living as "Chijin," existences who live in harmony with nature.
