Xingong Shen published the first songbook in contemporary China when he returned from his study in Japan, pioneering in the development of Chinese contemporary school education. In addition to the songbook, he also translated and published Elementary School Didactics by Ishihara Shigeo. However, it is important to note that Shen made some omissions and revisions to the original text in his translation, resulting in some significant inconsistencies between the original and the translated text in a great number of places. This article, through comparing the original and the translated text, illustrates what parts Shen decided to keep and what parts to leave out in his introducing the Musical Education Theory of the Meiji Era. It also explores the reasons behind these revisions and how they relate to the historical background of the time.
