This paper aims to show critical succession and development of Paul Tillich's existential theology. Tillich's main work is Systematic Theology Vols. I, II, III, which were written in 1951-1963. After the Second World War, Tillich's theology was uncritically introduced and accepted in Japan, so a critical review toward his theology is necessary. In chapter I, Tillich's philosophical thought of existentialism is discussed and critiqued. In chapter II, Tillich's viewpoint of history is critically analyzed. In chapter III, Tillich's radical thought of ambiguity is argued and critiqued. The author concludes that his viewpoint of history must be reexamined. Tillich's viewpoint of history shows his unique interpretation of history. As a result of this discussion, it is the author's hope that new dimensions of Tillich study will be open for discussion.
