The research described in this paper was designed to map the relationship between English language experience, awareness and reading ability. 227 undergraduate students were asked to answer a questionaire about their own experience and awarenss of English. They also took a reading test and vocabulary tests. Generally speaking, university students have had a wide variety of English language experience and have considerable interest in English. Differences were evident between different majors and the different sexes. Several experience factors and awareness factors were slightly or moderately correlated with reading speed and reading accuracy. After combining these factors to arrive at an English experience score, English awareneness score and vocabulary score, a path analysis was conducted. The path diagrams differ for reading and reading accuracy: the awareness score was directly related to readinp speed, but indirectly to reading accuracy.
