| Abstract |
There have been numerous investigations of the effects of social support on well-being. However, we still know virtually nothing about why and how this connection exists. In this paper, conceptual, methodological, and theoretical problems in studying social support are reviewed and discussed. Following the three taxonomic categories of social support (support as social embeddedness, support as perceived, and, support as enacted) developed by Barrera (1986), discussion centers on delineating both advantages and disadvantages within each approach and suggesting an integrated strategy for future investigation.
