Abstract
In many psychological domains, language expressions are viewed as vehicles conveying pure ideas held in one's mind. However, this view of sign can not explain psychological processes of expressing. Arguments of this article can be reduced to the following formula:Sign-expression does not carry sign-content but produce it. It is possible to distinguish the above two standpoints in terms of Vygotsky's dichotomy:meaning-sense. In the following discussion, the processes producing sense will be considered from two perspectives of sign:(1) Signifying (signifiant) and signified (signifie) are interdependent (Saussurian perspective). (2) Semiotic mediation is a dynamic activity (Vygotskian perspective). Finally Piaget's veiw of sign will be examined.
